WhatsApp's Username feature under govt scanner over online fraud concerns: Sources

The Indian government is set to investigate WhatsApp's upcoming feature that allows users to communicate via unique usernames. This examination stems from worries that the feature could be exploited by online scammers, despite WhatsApp's claims of it being a significant privacy enhancement. According to reports, the government intends to assess the privacy and security aspects of the 'User ID' system prior to or during its rollout. If any issues arise, Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, might be required to provide explanations or take corrective actions. Officials are particularly concerned that this feature could hinder law enforcement's ability to track down scammers. This review comes in response to a spike in online fraud cases in India. Authorities are evaluating whether the username-based setup could create new obstacles for identifying fraudsters or if it enhances privacy without compromising security. The examination will also focus on ensuring that sufficient protections against cybercriminals are in place. WhatsApp recently announced that usernames will be available globally in the coming months. This optional feature will permit users to initiate conversations using a unique username rather than their phone number. Users will retain the ability to reserve, change, or delete their usernames at will, while continuing to utilize existing safety features like blocking and reporting suspicious accounts. Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's Head of Product, explained to the BBC that this update aims to empower users regarding their identity on the platform. Usernames can be up to 35 characters long, with specific protections in place for public figures and celebrities to prevent impersonation. Initially, usernames can only be reserved through the mobile app, with support for WhatsApp Web and desktop expected to follow. To reserve a username, users need to update their WhatsApp app, navigate to settings, and select an available username. Notably, users who do not have your phone number will be able to see your username in group chats and direct messages, clearly marked with an '@' symbol. If someone has saved your number, they will still see the contact name they saved. The ability to change or delete usernames is entirely optional, and WhatsApp has indicated that if a username is removed, individuals will revert to seeing the user's phone number.
