In a significant move, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Facebook acted to dismantle a group tracking U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after intervention from the Department of Justice. Bondi took to social media platform X to state, "Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago." Bondi further emphasized her concerns, claiming that recent online campaigns have incited violence against ICE officers simply for performing their duties. She assured that the DOJ would persist in collaborating with tech companies to eliminate platforms that facilitate threats against federal law enforcement. In a response to inquiries, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, indicated that the group's removal was due to violations of their policies against coordinated harm. Although Meta did not specify the exact nature of the violation, they referred to their guidelines that prohibit the exposure of undercover personnel. The statement was issued by Francis Brennan, a former advisor to Trump who joined Meta earlier this year. The White House recently asserted that there has been an alarming rise in attacks on ICE officers, citing a more than 1,000 percent increase since January 21, 2025, compared to the previous year. However, reports indicate that officials have not provided evidence to substantiate this claim, with NPR highlighting that the dramatic increase in attacks lacks public verification. The Justice Department's actions were reportedly prompted by activist Laura Loomer, who called for the removal of the "ICE Sighting-Chicagoland" group, which boasted over 84,000 members. Loomer celebrated the DOJ's intervention, stating that they had responded to her concerns about the tracking group. The ICE Sighting-Chicagoland group had been increasingly utilized during the recent "Operation Midway Blitz," a deportation initiative led by the Trump administration, to alert community members of ICE's presence near schools and public areas. This situation has reignited tensions, as Trump and Republican leaders have previously accused the Biden administration of pressuring social media platforms to censor content. In his executive order aimed at combating what he termed "federal censorship," Trump criticized the previous administration for allegedly infringing on free speech by coercing social media companies to suppress dissenting voices.
