Govee, a prominent manufacturer of smart lighting solutions, has issued an apology following the appearance of a disturbingly inappropriate marketing image on its website. The image, which was supposed to highlight bedroom lighting, inadvertently showcased two books that prominently displayed the phrase 'white supremacy.' These books were positioned on a shelf above a child's bed, just beneath several toy animals, raising significant concerns among viewers. The incident came to light when a vigilant reader alerted The Verge, which was the first to report on the controversy. Upon investigation, it was revealed that Govee had removed the image from its site but initially did not respond to inquiries prior to the publication of the article. Connie Liu, Govee’s PR manager, later addressed the situation in a statement to Ars Technica, explaining that the image had been sourced from a third-party licensed library. Liu acknowledged that the marketing image lacked the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) or SynthID watermarking data typically found on AI-generated images. She emphasized, 'We recognize that our internal review and approval process did not meet the standard required. We are taking immediate steps to strengthen our processes to ensure this does not happen again.' However, Liu did not clarify whether human oversight is part of its image review process or what measures are in place to prevent the inclusion of offensive material in their marketing assets.
