Go eyes robotaxis and acquisitions after Japan’s biggest IPO of 2026. Here’s why it matters

Go's recent initial public offering (IPO) has emerged as Japan's largest for the year, providing crucial funding to tackle a pressing issue: the country's dwindling supply of taxi drivers. With ¥88.6 billion (approximately $553 million) raised, the taxi-hailing app aims to enhance its robotaxi initiatives and pursue strategic acquisitions, as confirmed by a company representative. The IPO, which took place on Tuesday, comes during one of Japan's quietest listing periods, amidst government advice for startups to consider selling rather than going public. Notable investments from firms such as BlackRock, Wellington Management, and M&G Investment Management highlight the current landscape of institutional investment in Japan. However, after an initial surge, Go's stock has dipped below its offering price, closing at ¥2,314, which reflects a 4% decline from the IPO price of ¥2,400. The push towards robotaxis stems from a significant challenge facing Japan's taxi industry — a 20% reduction in the number of drivers in recent years, driven largely by an aging population that suggests this trend will continue. Although ride-share services were introduced in Japan in 2024, they remain restricted to specific areas and require drivers to be affiliated with a taxi company, failing to effectively mitigate the driver shortage. Founded in 1977, Go has evolved into Japan’s largest ride-hailing platform, boasting 35 million downloads and an 80% market share by usage time across 46 of the nation's 47 prefectures. The company is optimistic about the future of robotaxis, although a timeline for their implementation remains uncertain. Go has engaged in a partnership with Waymo, the autonomous driving branch of Alphabet, and Nihon Kotsu, a major player in Japan’s taxi sector. Go oversees the strategic direction of this collaboration but has opted not to invest in autonomous driving technology directly. CEO Hiroshi Nakajima has indicated that Go will initiate fully autonomous rides once technology validation and regulatory approval are achieved. In the interim, the company is enhancing its traditional operations by forming alliances with Kakao T, Alipay, and WeChat Pay, enabling travelers from South Korea, China, and Taiwan to hail Go-affiliated taxis through their preferred apps. Go isn't alone in its pursuit of robotaxi services in Tokyo. Earlier this year, Uber, Wayve, and Nissan announced plans to launch pilot robotaxi operations in the city by late 2026, utilizing Nissan Leaf electric vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI technology. This partnership represents Uber's first venture into autonomous vehicle services in Japan, and they have also collaborated with S.Ride to facilitate bookings for international visitors through the Uber app. Similarly, Didi Mobility Japan, a joint venture between SoftBank and Didi Chuxing, is pursuing comparable initiatives.
