Even GoPro is pivoting to defense

In a challenging economic landscape, companies are increasingly turning to innovative avenues for growth, including data centers, energy storage, and now, defense contracts. This trend is evident as Ford's emerging energy storage division has led to a notable increase in its stock value, while Redwood Materials secured a hefty $425 million from tech giants like Google and Nvidia by focusing on energy solutions for data centers. The defense sector is also seeing significant investment, with Anduril Technologies recently raising an impressive $5 billion, underscoring the allure of government contracts for many startups. This shifting focus brings us to GoPro, the well-known action camera manufacturer that has weathered numerous challenges over the years. Despite its early dominance, the company has faced fierce competition and dwindling sales, leading to a stagnant stock price that hovered around $1 two years ago. In light of these struggles, GoPro announced last month its intention to explore opportunities within the defense and aerospace sectors, a move that seemed logical given its reputation for high-quality, durable imaging technology. Initially, this pivot created a surge in GoPro's stock price, nearly doubling it for a brief period. However, this momentum was short-lived, as the stock price soon reverted to previous levels. On Thursday, GoPro disclosed that it had engaged the investment bank Houlihan Lokey to assess a potential sale and other strategic options. The board of directors revealed that they had received multiple unsolicited inquiries from various sectors, including defense, consumer goods, and finance, signaling a critical juncture for the company. This isn’t the first time GoPro has contemplated a sale; back in 2018, CEO Nick Woodman briefly considered such an option. However, the current situation appears more precarious, as the company recently announced layoffs affecting 25% of its workforce, reducing its headcount to just over 600 employees from a peak of 1,500. Once a tech sensation, GoPro now finds itself grappling with a volatile market, where a significantly increased Pentagon budget could represent a potential lifeline in these turbulent times.
