‘Their history is just erased’: Google drops a key program for boosting women in tech

In a surprising move, Google has announced the discontinuation of its Women Techmakers program, a vital resource aimed at promoting women in the technology sector. The abrupt decision, communicated through a brief email, has left members feeling disheartened and sidelined, as years of collaborative efforts and achievements appear to have been disregarded. Sherry Yang, a Google engineering manager from Canada, expressed her dismay, stating, "Everything that I ever hosted and facilitated for Women Techmakers is gone. The history of many ambassadors who contributed significantly has just been erased." This sentiment resonates with many who have benefitted from the program since its inception in 2012, which provided visibility, community, and resources to women in tech globally, irrespective of their affiliation with Google. The decision is seen as part of a larger trend, as major tech companies face increasing scrutiny and pressure regarding their diversity initiatives. Google has transferred the program's oversight to Technovation, an external organization, but many in the Women Techmakers community feel this shift diminishes their direct connection to one of the industry's leading corporations. Former ambassador Vassiliki Dalakiari pointed out the implications of this change: "The message it sends to women in tech is that we cannot count on unwavering support from big corporations. We need to keep speaking up until we are heard." Despite assurances from Technovation's CEO that funding will continue to support Women Techmakers members, concerns linger about the potential for diminished impact compared to Google’s substantial resources. The transition is particularly troubling for those who witnessed a gradual decline in support leading up to this decision. Members have reported challenges in securing funding for events and travel, with some feeling that their participation was merely nominal rather than substantive. In recent communications, members were informed that their content, including videos and collaborative projects, would be removed, intensifying feelings of loss and betrayal. "Ending a global women-in-tech program without informing or engaging its most active contributors sends a clear message and it’s disappointing," Dalakiari lamented. Amidst these developments, experts suggest that the broader context of governmental pressures is contributing to a retreat from diversity efforts among tech giants. Donald Tomaskovic-Devey, a sociology professor, noted that as federal scrutiny has waned, companies may fear backlash for maintaining targeted diversity programs. As Google steps back from its commitments, many are left questioning the future of women’s representation in tech and the effectiveness of alternative support channels. The ongoing discussions reflect a growing concern over how corporate culture and management practices will shape the experiences of women and underrepresented groups in the industry moving forward.
