Google CEO Sundar Pichai shares what it was like to be an AI leader and then get beaten to the market by OpenAI with ChatGPT

During a recent discussion at Salesforce's Dreamforce event, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, shared insights into the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence following the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT. This moment marked a significant turning point for the tech giant, which had been a frontrunner in AI development for years. Pichai recounted the surprise and urgency that enveloped Google when OpenAI, a relatively unknown startup at the time, unveiled its innovative chatbot. "Credit to OpenAI, they put it out first," he acknowledged, recognizing the swift impact of ChatGPT, which debuted in late 2022 with the backing of Microsoft. This move was perceived as a serious threat to Google's long-standing dominance in the AI sector. In response to the unexpected competition, Pichai revealed that Google management declared a "code red," prompting a significant shift in focus towards AI initiatives. He drew parallels between this moment and other historic disruptions in the tech industry, such as the emergence of YouTube during Google's video search efforts and the rise of Instagram amidst Facebook's popularity. Reflecting on Google's internal developments, Pichai mentioned that the company was working on its own chatbot but had not reached a stage where it could confidently launch a quality product. "We knew in a different world, we would've probably launched our chatbot maybe a few months down the line," he noted, emphasizing the necessity for a polished offering to maintain Google's reputation. Despite the initial setback, Pichai expressed excitement about ChatGPT's launch, indicating that it signaled a shift in the competitive landscape. He explained that Google was cautious about releasing its chatbot competitor due to potential reputational risks. Eventually, in March 2023, Google introduced its own chatbot, initially named Bard and later rebranded as Gemini, showcasing the company's commitment to advancing in the AI domain.
