I tried Google’s prototype smart glasses and it almost made me forget about my phone

How often do you find yourself reaching for your phone for directions, video calls, or quick searches? Google is on a mission to change that. Along with a growing number of tech firms, the company is betting heavily on smart glasses that leverage artificial intelligence to deliver information and analyze surroundings through integrated cameras and microphones. In a recent showcase, Google provided a deeper insight into the software behind these glasses, initially revealed a year ago. As the anticipated launch approaches next year, the potential is there for a future where frequent phone checks become a thing of the past. However, the success of these glasses is far from guaranteed. Google Glass, the company’s earlier venture into smart eyewear, faced a significant setback around a decade ago due to issues with style, cost, limited features, and privacy concerns. While Google predominantly earns from search, advertising, and cloud services, the stakes for smart glasses are high as tech titans vie for dominance in what could be the next evolution of personal computing. Juston Payne, Google’s director of product management for Android XR, emphasized the importance of evolving with new computing platforms. Taking on notable competition, Google faces challenges from Meta, which recently celebrated strong sales of its Ray-Ban glasses, indicating a growing interest in wearable tech. Like these competitors, Google’s glasses offer hands-free functionality, allowing users to capture photos, receive directions, take calls, and gain insights about nearby objects. During a demonstration, I queried the AI, Gemini, about various topics while looking at books and grocery items, showcasing its practical applications. Since my previous experience with the prototype, Google has made significant enhancements. A simple voice command allowed me to transform a room photo into a winter wonderland, highlighting the advanced capabilities of their AI model, Nano Banana. However, this also raises concerns about privacy and the ease of capturing and altering images—a challenge Google faced with its earlier Glass model. To address these concerns, the new prototypes include a light indicator to signal when the camera or AI functions are active, along with options for users to delete their interactions. As Payne noted, gaining social acceptance is crucial for the success of wearable tech. These glasses are designed to provide real-time information without the need to glance down at a phone, featuring a version of Google Maps that visually guides users in their line of sight. However, the transition to wearing smart glasses may come with social challenges, as I found myself interrupting the AI and speaking before it was ready to listen. While Google acknowledges that these glasses won’t replace smartphones, they envision a significant role for them in the future of computing. The glasses will be available in two models: one with a visual display and another focused on audio feedback. Google is collaborating with eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, although pricing and launch dates remain undisclosed. Additionally, Google is developing a variant with dual screens for enhanced graphics, but details on its release are still under wraps. The impact of Android XR and Gemini extends beyond Google itself; much like Android for smartphones, Android XR will be available to other manufacturers, including Samsung and Xreal, marking a new chapter in smart eyewear and AI integration. As Chi Xu, founder and CEO of Xreal, remarked, he believes the potential of AI is genuine, underscoring the optimism surrounding this technology's future.
