In a significant advancement for file sharing, Google has introduced an update to its Quick Share feature, enabling effortless transfers between Android devices and Apple's AirDrop. This functionality is launching with the newly unveiled Pixel 10 series and extends compatibility to iPhones, iPads, and macOS, with intentions to broaden support to additional Android devices shortly. With this update, users can seamlessly share photos, videos, and files without needing to consider the type of device their recipient owns. Currently, Quick Share can interact with AirDrop when iPhone users set their visibility to the ‘Everyone for 10 minutes’ option. As soon as this setting is activated, Pixel users will be able to see the iPhone listed as an available device in their Quick Share interface. Google described this collaboration as a preliminary step towards achieving smooth cross-platform sharing, expressing eagerness to partner with Apple for future enhancements, including the potential for a ‘Contacts Only’ mode. Users can verify the correct recipient by checking the device name displayed on their screens. The system supports bidirectional transfers, allowing iPhone users to send files to Pixel devices as long as the Pixel device has its discoverability feature enabled. Google emphasized that the connection established through this feature is direct and peer-to-peer, ensuring no data is routed through servers or stored externally. With a focus on security, Google assures users that their data is protected with robust safeguards, which have been validated by independent security experts. This update aligns with Google's ongoing efforts to enhance interoperability across platforms, which includes RCS support and alerts for unknown tracking devices. Interestingly, details regarding Apple's involvement in this initiative have not been disclosed, and Apple has yet to comment on the new feature.
