In a bold move that deviates from the trend of ever-growing camera bumps, Google has unveiled the Pixel 10a, a budget smartphone that boasts a completely flat design. This innovative approach allows the device to lie flush against surfaces, enhancing usability while keeping aesthetics sleek. While the Pixel 10a maintains a familiar design reminiscent of its predecessor, the Pixel 9a, it introduces a vibrant color palette including Lavender, Berry, and Fog alongside the classic black. The 6.3-inch display remains unchanged in size but has been upgraded to deliver a brighter experience at 3,000 nits, ensuring visibility even in direct sunlight. Although capable of reaching a 120Hz refresh rate, the phone defaults to 60Hz, requiring users to adjust settings for optimal performance. In terms of build quality, the Pixel 10a competes closely with the flagship Pixel 10, differing mainly in materials. While the Pixel 10 features premium Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both sides, the 10a opts for a plastic back paired with Gorilla Glass 7i on the front. Notably, it houses a larger battery at 5,100 mAh compared to the Pixel 10’s 4,970 mAh, allowing for extended use throughout the day. Under the hood, the Pixel 10a is powered by the Google Tensor G4 CPU, the same as the Pixel 9a, meaning users may not experience significant performance boosts if they are frequent app switchers. However, it does support improved charging capabilities, with 30W charging via USB-C, up from the previous 23W, and wireless charging options that extend up to 10W. Camera-wise, the Pixel 10a retains a 48-megapixel main lens and a 13-megapixel wide-angle camera, offering satisfactory performance in most lighting conditions. However, the ultrawide camera lacks autofocus and may not capture finer details, particularly in low light. The device includes helpful AI features like a camera coach that assists users in framing their shots and the Auto Best Take feature that merges images for optimal results. Despite these enhancements, some advanced AI functionalities available on the Pixel 10 series are absent from the Pixel 10a, such as notification summaries and on-device call translation. However, Google commits to providing seven years of software updates, ensuring longevity for this model. At a price point of $499, the Pixel 10a delivers excellent battery life, a bright display, and a lightweight design, making it a compelling choice for budget-conscious consumers. Yet, those who already own a Pixel 9a may find little incentive to upgrade. Additionally, competitors like the Nothing 4a Pro at the same price offer enticing alternatives with superior specifications, including a brighter display and faster charging capabilities.
