‘I’m glad it’s over.’ Google CEO thanks Trump for antitrust 'resolution'

During a recent White House dinner attended by tech industry leaders, President Donald Trump expressed congratulations to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and co-founder Sergey Brin following a significant antitrust decision favoring Alphabet. "You had a very good day yesterday," Trump remarked as he addressed Pichai during the evening event. The favorable ruling resulted in Alphabet adding a staggering $230 billion to its market capitalization, alleviating concerns over a potential breakup stemming from a landmark antitrust case initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice back in 2020. Last year, Google was determined to be operating an illegal monopoly in the internet search sector. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta's decision this week favored less severe consequences than those proposed by the DOJ, leading to a surge in the company's share prices. Pichai expressed relief in response to Trump's comments, stating, "I'm glad it's over," which prompted laughter from the guests at the table. He acknowledged the lengthy process involved and appreciated the constructive dialogue during Trump's administration that facilitated the resolution. In a noteworthy exchange, Pichai highlighted the transformative nature of artificial intelligence, stating, "The AI moment is one of the most transformative moments any of us have ever seen or will see in our lifetimes." He commended the administration for its investments in AI, referencing the recently launched "Winning the AI Race: America's AI Action Plan." This plan outlines 90 federal policy actions focusing on innovation acceleration, establishing AI infrastructure, and leading international discussions on security. Pichai also mentioned an executive order from July that mandates AI models avoid incorporating ideologies such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, referred to as "Woke AI." Additionally, discussions are ongoing between Google and Trump's legal team regarding a lawsuit related to allegations of censorship on YouTube, stemming from the suspension of Trump's accounts after the January 6 Capitol riots. Earlier in the day, Pichai participated in an AI Education Taskforce event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump. Trump interjected during the dinner conversation, pointing out that it was Biden's administration that prosecuted the antitrust lawsuit, a case initiated while he was in office. Pichai chose not to correct him, allowing the discussion to continue without interruption.
