Google is expanding the reach of its experimental AI-driven app builder, Opal, to an additional 15 countries following substantial interest since its U.S. debut earlier this year. The newly included nations are Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, Singapore, Colombia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Argentina, and Pakistan. Megan Li, Senior Product Manager at Google Labs, shared insights in a recent blog post, noting, "When we opened up Opal to users in the U.S., we anticipated they might create simple, fun tools. However, we were surprised by the wave of sophisticated, practical, and highly creative apps produced by early adopters. Their ingenuity highlighted the need to make Opal accessible to more creators around the world." Opal empowers users to conceptualize the type of app they wish to develop, utilizing Google’s AI models to automatically generate the application. Once created, users can navigate and customize the app via a visual workflow editor, allowing adjustments to inputs, outputs, and generation steps. The final product can be published online and shared with others through a Google login. In conjunction with this global launch, Google has introduced several enhancements aimed at improving Opal’s functionality and user experience. Notably, the debugging features have been upgraded, enabling users to test each workflow step within the visual editor. Errors are now displayed in real time, offering context and making troubleshooting easier. Performance enhancements have also been prioritized. According to Google, the time required to create a new Opal app has been significantly reduced, and the platform’s capability to execute steps in parallel allows for more intricate workflows to handle multiple actions simultaneously. Opal now stands alongside similar platforms from companies like Canva, Figma, and Replit, all designed to assist non-technical users in designing and prototyping applications without the need for traditional coding skills.
