Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps

In a significant move aimed at enhancing security, Google has announced upcoming changes for Android that will reshape the way apps are sideloaded starting in September 2026. The initiative is designed to combat malware and ensure a safer device ecosystem for users. As part of this new approach, Google will implement a developer verification program that restricts application sideloading exclusively to verified developers. Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, emphasized that the company has been attentive to user feedback, leading to the introduction of a more advanced process that allows experienced users to bypass the standard app verification. Under these new regulations, developers wishing to distribute apps outside of the Google Play Store will face additional requirements. They must provide personal identification, submit a copy of their signing keys, and pay a fee of $25. While this may deter some creators, Google argues that these measures are necessary to protect users from potentially harmful applications. For applications released by unverified developers, installation will be barred on Android devices unless users actively seek out the newly implemented advanced flow hidden within the developer settings. Unlike the current sideloading process, which alerts users to modify the 'unknown sources' setting, the new verification bypass requires a more involved procedure and is not immediately visible to all users.
