Google adds Gemini-powered Dictation to Gboard, which could be bad news for dictation startups

In a significant move, Google has unveiled Rambler, an AI-driven voice dictation feature integrated into Gboard, its popular Android keyboard app, during the Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 event. This development positions Google as a formidable competitor to emerging dictation solutions like Wispr Flow and Typeless, which have gained traction primarily on desktop and iOS platforms, leaving Android users with fewer options. Rambler is designed to enhance user experience by eliminating filler words such as 'ums' and 'ahs', and it adeptly manages mid-sentence corrections. For example, if a user says, "I am going to meet you on Wednesday at our usual coffee shop at 3 PM… umm, 2 PM," Rambler accurately reflects the intended correction. Utilizing Gemini’s advanced multilingual models, Rambler also supports code switching, allowing users to seamlessly transition between languages, such as English and Hindi, without losing context. Google assures users that Rambler maintains privacy by not storing voice recordings; it only processes audio for transcription purposes. Ben Greenwood, director of Android Core Experiences, emphasized that the feature employs a mix of on-device and cloud processing, showcasing Google’s commitment to user safety and privacy – a strategic contrast to third-party dictation apps that may not prioritize data security. Over recent years, the dictation app landscape has expanded with various entrants like Wispr Flow, Willow, and Typeless predominantly on desktop and iOS, leaving Android relatively underserved. Google previously launched AI Edge Eloquent, an offline dictation app on iOS, but Rambler marks a decisive effort to bridge the gap in Android. Initially, Rambler will be available exclusively on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer, with plans to extend to other Android phones. The inherent advantage of Gboard being the default keyboard for most Android users means Rambler will be readily accessible to hundreds of millions from the outset. This raises a critical question for dictation startups: beyond creating a quality product, can they offer compelling features or privacy assurances that motivate users to seek alternatives?
