Google removes nearly 11,000 YouTube channels due to Russia, China links

In a significant move to combat disinformation, Google has removed nearly 11,000 YouTube channels and associated accounts during the second quarter of 2025. This action, revealed in a report by CNBC and Google's official communications, is part of a larger initiative aimed at countering coordinated influence operations orchestrated by state-affiliated actors, predominantly from China and Russia. The Threat Analysis Group (TAG) at Google reported that over 7,700 of the deleted accounts were linked to China. These channels disseminated content in both Chinese and English, promoting the interests of the People’s Republic of China, advocating for President Xi Jinping’s policies, and discussing U.S. foreign relations. Additionally, more than 2,000 YouTube channels associated with Russia were terminated, which had been sharing multilingual content that favored pro-Russia viewpoints while disparaging Ukraine, NATO, and Western nations. Some of the content removed was directly associated with Russian state-sponsored entities and consulting firms. In a specific instance from May, Google took down 20 YouTube channels, four advertising accounts, and one blog connected to RT (formerly known as Russia Today), the state-controlled media outlet. Although RT was banned from YouTube back in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this latest action underscores ongoing efforts to spread propaganda through alternate accounts. RT has also been accused of financially incentivizing influencers to impact political discussions ahead of the 2024 U.S. elections. Google's crackdown extends beyond just China and Russia; it has also disrupted coordinated influence operations from several other nations, including Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Israel, Ghana, and Romania. These efforts often targeted political adversaries and addressed sensitive regional topics, such as internal elections and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Notably, 457 YouTube channels linked to Azerbaijan were aimed at promoting pro-government positions while attacking domestic critics and Armenia. In the context of Iran, many of the removed channels expressed support for the Iranian government and Palestine, while criticizing the U.S. and Israel. The recent takedowns are not limited to YouTube; they also affect Google’s wider ecosystem, including Ads, AdSense, Blogger, and Google News. Several domains connected to these influence operations have been barred from appearing in Google News and Discover feeds. This latest wave of actions follows Google's earlier removal of over 23,000 accounts in the first quarter of the year, bringing the total number of state-affiliated propaganda channels removed in 2025 to over 30,000. This highlights the escalating scale and tenacity of such influence campaigns. In a parallel effort, Meta has also taken measures against digital manipulation, recently reporting the deletion of 10 million fake Facebook and Instagram accounts impersonating popular content creators, as part of its ongoing strategy to mitigate spam and misleading information across its platforms.
