In a significant ruling, Google has faced a setback as an appeals court has upheld a judge's mandate requiring the tech giant to reform its app store. This decision stems from a high-profile antitrust lawsuit initiated by Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. According to reports from Reuters, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed Google's claims that the trial judge had made mistakes that biased the case in favor of Epic Games. Epic Games launched its lawsuit in 2020, and earlier this year, a jury found that Google had engaged in practices that unlawfully suppressed competition. As a result, the trial judge ordered Google to modify its app store, allowing greater access for rival developers and providing Android users with more options for app downloads. Although this order was initially put on hold while Google appealed, the court's recent decision paves the way for the mandated changes. During the appeal, Google maintained that its Play Store was in direct competition with Apple’s App Store and argued that the trial judge had restricted its ability to use this defense against Epic's antitrust allegations. However, the court’s ruling signifies a critical moment in the ongoing battle over app store policies and competition in the tech industry.
