Google appears to be advancing its AI capabilities by exploring a method that would allow users to activate its Gemini assistant effortlessly. According to a report from Android Headlines, the tech giant is developing technology that triggers the AI assistant automatically when the device senses proximity to the user's face. This groundbreaking feature utilizes the existing hardware of smartphones, specifically the capacitive sensor grid embedded in touchscreens. Traditionally used for detecting finger touches, Google has discovered that these sensors can also detect nearby objects, including a user’s face or hand, without any physical contact. When a user brings their phone close to their face, the sensor grid registers a significant change in the electric field surrounding the device. This pattern is analyzed to identify the presence of the user’s face. Theoretically, once the device confirms this proximity, it will automatically activate the Gemini assistant, eliminating the need for voice commands or button presses. Currently, many smartphones include dedicated AI buttons or customizable options that can be employed to summon Gemini. Common phrases like ‘Hey Google’ have become familiar for many Android users, but challenges remain—especially for those wearing masks or in noisy environments where activation can be cumbersome. The new face detection method promises quicker and more convenient access to Gemini. Furthermore, since it relies on low-power capacitive sensors, it is unlikely to drain the phone's battery significantly. The technology is anticipated to improve in accuracy and responsiveness over time. While the specifics of when this feature will be implemented on Android devices remain unclear, the report is based on a patent, indicating that the concept is still in development.
