Gemini’s ‘Agentic’ Era is here, it can now automate multi-step tasks on Android apps

Google has unveiled an exciting update to its Gemini platform, enabling users to automate complex, multi-step tasks directly on their Android devices. This innovative chatbot will allow users to seamlessly navigate through various third-party applications, simplifying processes such as ordering food or booking rides without manual intervention. The tech giant is implementing a secure virtual environment that transforms Android's operating system from a passive tool into an active AI assistant. This feature is currently available as an early preview and is set to roll out as a beta option in the Gemini app for select Android devices, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S26 series. Initially, Gemini's automation capabilities will focus on specific applications within categories such as food delivery, grocery shopping, and rideshare services. So, how does this automation operate? The new feature essentially acts as a virtual personal agent on Android, capable of completing user tasks by navigating third-party apps. Users simply need to prompt Gemini with a command like, “Order my usual pepperoni pizza from DoorDash.” The AI will analyze the relevant app and order history, guiding the user to the checkout page seamlessly. Additionally, Google emphasizes that users can track Gemini's progress in real-time through notifications, providing the option to intervene or halt the process as needed. With automation running in a Secure Virtual Window, Gemini can interact solely with the relevant application, ensuring privacy and security. This advancement aims to minimize the time and effort users spend on repetitive tasks. Currently, the Gemini multi-step feature is being launched for users in the U.S. and Korea. By introducing this capability, Google positions itself firmly in the competitive landscape of agentic AI, joining rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI, but with a unique offering that brings autonomous execution directly to users’ pockets.
