Google races to put Gemini at the center of Android before Apple’s AI reboot

Google is strategically positioning its latest Android update to transform Gemini from a simple chatbot into an integrated operating layer across devices, including smartphones, browsers, and laptops. This move comes just weeks before Apple is anticipated to unveil its own AI-driven advancements at WWDC, further intensifying the competition in the AI landscape. In advance of the Google I/O developer conference, the tech giant showcased various enhancements to Android, including AI-driven app automation, an upgraded Chrome experience, new creative tools, and a revamped Android Auto. These updates are designed to establish Gemini as a central player in Google’s efforts to directly compete with AI leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic, while also serving as the foundational AI technology across its extensive product suite. Sameer Samat, who leads Google's Android ecosystem, emphasized that the company is reimagining Android around Gemini Intelligence to simplify everyday tasks for users. "We're transitioning from an operating system to an intelligence system," he stated. The latest features allow Gemini Intelligence to navigate between apps, comprehend screen content, and perform tasks that previously required users to switch between multiple applications. This evolution marks a shift from a traditional assistant model, where users pose questions and receive answers, to a more proactive agent-like experience. For example, Gemini can extract relevant data from Gmail, create shopping lists, and handle reservations. Samat illustrated this capability by describing a scenario where a user could ask Gemini to analyze a barbecue guest list, generate a menu, and compile ingredient requests for delivery—all while ensuring that the user has the final say before any purchases are finalized, reinforcing the principle that "the human is always in the loop." As Apple faces mounting pressure to enhance its own AI offerings, Google’s advancements with Gemini highlight the company’s commitment to embedding AI deeply into user experiences while maintaining user control over visibility and actions. The rollout of these app automation features will be phased in, beginning with the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer, and will eventually extend to a broader range of Android devices, including wearables, vehicles, and laptops. Additionally, Google is redesigning Android Auto with Gemini at the helm, aiming to seamlessly integrate its assistant into vehicles—currently present in over 250 million cars. The upcoming updates will provide significant improvements, including the largest maps update in a decade and AI assistance for tasks like ordering food while on the road. With Wall Street responding favorably to Alphabet's AI initiatives, driving the company's stock price up over 140% in the last year compared to Apple's 40% increase, investors are keen to see how Gemini will become integral to everyday technology interactions.
