In a groundbreaking move, Google has announced that its Gemini AI service will be available for free to more than 500 million users of Reliance Jio in India. This initiative comes as global AI companies intensify their efforts to capture the Indian market. On Thursday, Google disclosed its partnership with Reliance Intelligence, a collaboration between Reliance Industries and Meta. This agreement will provide users with the AI Pro plan, featuring Gemini 2.5 Pro, enhanced access to NotebookLM for educational and research purposes, and 2 TB of cloud storage, among other benefits. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, emphasized that the goal is to empower India through AI by joining forces with strategic partners like Google. As the largest telecom operator in India, Reliance Jio is well-positioned to facilitate this initiative. The rollout of Google's services, valued at approximately 35,100 rupees per user (around $396), will begin with early access for users aged 18 to 25 who have unlimited Jio 5G plans, extending for 18 months. Ultimately, the services are expected to be made freely accessible to the entire Jio customer base. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "I'm excited for how this collaboration will help expand access to AI across India." With around 377 million Gen Z individuals in India, consumer spending in this demographic is projected to surge from $860 billion to $2 trillion by 2035, according to Boston Consulting Group research. India boasts the largest user base on various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, making it a critical market for digital services. Following this trend, in July, Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom provider, collaborated with Perplexity to offer free access to its AI tools for its 360 million customers. This strategic partnership between telecom companies and AI service providers is paving the way for broader access to digital tools across India. Recently, OpenAI also announced that it would offer its ChatGPT Go plan free for a year to Indian users starting November 4, following an earlier launch of its affordable subscription plan. As these developments unfold, the Indian telecom landscape, primarily dominated by Jio and Airtel, presents a significant opportunity for tech companies to reach vast audiences with innovative digital offerings.
