On Thursday, Google unveiled an exciting upgrade as it prepares to integrate its Gemini AI assistant into vehicles equipped with Google technology. This advancement promises a more sophisticated and conversational AI experience for drivers, enhancing their time on the road. This announcement comes on the heels of General Motors' recent reveal that approximately 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 onward—covering brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC—will feature Gemini. However, Google has yet to specify which automakers will be included, indicating that Gemini’s reach will extend beyond just GM vehicles. The rollout will kick off in the United States, initially supporting English language users, with plans for broader availability in the months ahead. Importantly, Gemini will not be exclusive to new models; it will also be available for many existing compatible vehicles through software updates, building on the initial launch of cars with Google built-in back in 2020. According to Google, the Gemini update transforms how drivers interact with their cars, enabling a more conversational approach. For example, drivers can casually request to find a well-rated restaurant with outdoor seating along their route, while Gemini utilizes Google Maps data to offer relevant suggestions. It can also handle follow-up inquiries about parking or menu options, taking dietary preferences into account. Beyond restaurant recommendations, Gemini is equipped to perform various tasks such as adjusting vehicle settings, providing directions, suggesting music, summarizing incoming messages, and enabling hands-free responses. Additionally, the beta version of Gemini Live allows for more spontaneous, real-time conversations, initiated by drivers through a simple voice command or button tap. For drivers signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles, an upgrade prompt will appear, allowing them to easily access Gemini through voice commands, on-screen controls, or steering wheel buttons. Google has ambitious plans to broaden Gemini’s language support and regional availability, with future updates expected to enhance integration with services like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
