Gemini AI could work with phone, WhatsApp and other Android apps: Report

Google is under scrutiny following revelations about its Gemini AI assistant, which will soon begin interacting with various Android apps by default. An email allegedly sent to a select group of Android users indicated that this change would automatically take effect on July 7, leading to a wave of confusion and privacy worries among users. Screenshots shared on social media, including by prominent tipster CID on X, showed the email's subject line stating, "We've made it easier for Gemini to interact with your device." The communication outlined Google's plans to enhance Gemini's functionality by allowing it to connect seamlessly with apps such as Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities. A particularly concerning aspect of the email was its wording, suggesting that Gemini would access these apps regardless of user settings related to app access. The term "Gemini Apps" refers to what was formerly called Gemini Extensions, which are tools designed for Google's AI to execute tasks across multiple applications. Until now, users had the option to decide which apps Gemini could engage with through the settings menu. However, the information in the recent email suggests that this control might soon be diminished. While the email does mention that users can disable these features in the Apps settings page, it fails to provide clear guidance on how to do so. This lack of clarity has only intensified users' concerns, as it seems to contradict the initial message about the feature's unavoidable integration. As the rollout date approaches, users are calling on Google to clarify its stance and offer more transparent options for managing AI permissions. With the integration set to launch on July 7, many are anxious for a response from the tech giant, hoping for enhanced user control over their data and privacy.
