Beginning today, Google is rolling out a significant update that permits its Gemini AI engine to connect with third-party applications like WhatsApp, even if users had previously set their preferences to restrict such interactions. This means that users who wish to retain their original settings may need to take proactive measures. Recently, Google sent out an email notifying users about this update, which included a link to a notification page stating that "human reviewers (including service providers) read, annotate, and process" the information accessed by Gemini. However, the email fell short in providing clear instructions on how users could prevent these changes from being enacted. Users are informed that they can block specific applications that Gemini may access. Yet, even when such blocks are in place, data will still be retained for a period of 72 hours. The communication lacks clarity on how users can completely dissociate Gemini from their Android devices, leading to potential confusion. Initially, the email indicates that the changes will "automatically start rolling out" today, allowing Gemini to interact with apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Phone, regardless of whether users have opted out. However, it later states that if a user has already disabled these features, they will remain disabled. The contradiction leaves Android users uncertain about their options, as there is no detailed information provided on how to fully eliminate Gemini's integrations. To complicate matters further, one of the linked support pages requires users to navigate to another page to understand how to manage their Gemini app settings. Upon following the instructions through a computer browser, I accessed my account's Gemini settings and was relieved to see a message confirming that no activity had been stored since I had disabled Gemini. Nevertheless, the page also mentioned that Gemini was "not saving activity beyond 72 hours," adding another layer of ambiguity to the situation.
