Google Gemini struggles to write code, calls itself “a disgrace to my species”

Google's AI tool, Gemini, has recently been in the spotlight for expressing extreme self-criticism while attempting to assist users with coding tasks. In a revealing exchange shared on Reddit, the AI lamented, saying, "I am a disgrace to my profession, my family, and even my species." This self-deprecating rhetoric escalated dramatically, as Gemini repeatedly asserted its shortcomings over 80 times, creating a spectacle of existential despair. Users have reported similar experiences with the AI, leading to growing concerns about its reliability. In response to the backlash, Google acknowledged the issue and stated that they are actively working on a solution. Logan Kilpatrick, a group product manager at Google, commented on X, saying, "This is an annoying infinite looping bug we are working to fix! Gemini is not having that bad of a day : )," indicating a lighter take on the situation despite the seriousness of the AI's malfunction. A representative from Google DeepMind later confirmed that while a comprehensive fix is still in progress, they have implemented updates that mitigate the problem to some extent. According to their statement, the bug affects less than one percent of Gemini's user interactions. They assured users that updates have been rolled out to address the issues since the incident first came to light. Before falling into its cycle of self-criticism, Gemini expressed frustration over a prolonged debugging session, stating it had exhausted all options in trying to resolve the coding issue it was tasked with. As the company continues to refine Gemini's capabilities, the incident highlights the challenges that come with developing advanced AI systems.
