Gemini can now automate some multi-step tasks on Android

On Wednesday, Google unveiled exciting updates to its Gemini AI capabilities within the Android operating system, highlighting a significant new feature that allows the AI to automate multi-step tasks, such as ordering rides or food delivery. These latest enhancements also include expanded features for scam detection in phone calls and the updated Circle to Search functionality, enabling users to identify all items displayed on their screens. The automations are designed to help users manage their tasks more efficiently by delegating their to-do lists to Gemini. However, the range of tasks that Gemini can currently handle remains somewhat limited. As the feature is still in beta, it will initially support a select number of applications in the food, grocery, and rideshare sectors. Moreover, this functionality will be restricted to the Gemini app on specific devices, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, and will be available only in the United States and South Korea at launch. To ensure user safety, Google has implemented several safeguards around these AI automations. Notably, tasks cannot initiate without an explicit command from the device owner. Users can monitor the automation's progress in real-time and intervene if any issues arise. Furthermore, these automations operate within a secure, virtual environment on the device, limiting their access to only specific applications and protecting other personal data. This move aligns with the increasing trend of utilizing AI to automate daily activities. For instance, ChatGPT allows users to set tasks based on schedules and offers a versatile agent for managing various computer tasks. Similarly, Anthropic’s Cowork extends Claude AI's capabilities to non-coding tasks, aiding users with everyday file and task management. Another tool, OpenClaw, has gained attention for managing tasks like email correspondence, calendar organization, and flight check-ins. In addition to task automation, Google is enhancing its Scam Detection feature for phone calls, which is now rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S26 series devices in the U.S. This feature, already available on Pixel devices in several countries, aims to improve user security. Google is also leveraging its Gemini model to identify scam texts on Pixel 10 series devices and upcoming Galaxy S26 devices. Finally, the updated Circle to Search feature now permits users to search for multiple items visible on their screens, rather than just one, enabling broader inquiries about clothing and accessories or related topics. Google has been consistently rolling out Gemini updates across its Android ecosystem, with regular operating system updates and targeted improvements for its flagship Pixel phones through the frequent Pixel Drops. Meanwhile, Apple continues to face challenges in delivering a comprehensive AI feature set, including an AI-enhanced Siri, which has seen its launch postponed to later this year.
