During the account setup, some new users are now presented with two choices: retain the 5GB of free storage or link their phone number to gain access to the complete 15GB. A notification displayed to users states, "Your account includes 5 GB of storage. Now get even more storage space with your phone number for Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. Unlock 15 GB storage at no cost by using your phone number. Google will use your phone number to ensure storage is allocated only once per person." The reasoning behind this proposed change revolves around implementing a "one-per-person" guideline. By requiring a phone number, Google aims to prevent the proliferation of bot accounts and spam, ensuring that the 15GB storage is allocated to legitimate users only. While Google has yet to officially announce this adjustment, 9to5Google noted that updates have already been made to the company's support pages.
