In a significant move towards unifying technology, Google has announced its development of an Android-powered PC. Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, expressed his excitement, stating he has previewed the device and is eager to own one. During a recent discussion with Amon, Rick Osterloh, Google's head of platforms and devices, confirmed the project’s existence, highlighting a shift in how Google approaches its operating systems. "Historically, we've maintained distinct systems for PCs and smartphones, but now we're focusing on creating a shared technical foundation for our products across both domains," Osterloh explained. He emphasized the potential of this convergence, stating, "This initiative allows us to leverage our advancements in artificial intelligence, integrating our Geminimodels and assistant, thus inviting our entire application and developer ecosystem into the PC landscape. This is a pivotal step in making Android more versatile across all computing categories." Amon added to the excitement, saying, "I’ve seen it, and it’s remarkable. It truly embodies the vision of merging mobile and PC technologies. I can’t wait to have one myself." This new Android PC project aligns with Google’s previously announced strategy to merge ChromeOS and Android into a cohesive platform, enhancing user experience across devices. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is set to unveil its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, which is expected to power many upcoming Android flagship models. Notably, Xiaomi has confirmed that its Xiaomi 17 series will feature this new processor, while other brands like OnePlus, iQOO, and Realme are also anticipated to launch devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 this year.
