One AI conversation Google's chief scientist won't have

In a recent episode of "The Moonshot Podcast," Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist, revealed his reluctance to engage in discussions about artificial general intelligence (AGI). Dean, who has been instrumental in AI advancements at Google DeepMind and Google Research, emphasized the complexities of defining AGI, noting that varying interpretations contribute to the difficulty of the topic. He stated, "The reason I tend to steer away from AGI conversations is that lots of people have very different definitions of it, and the difficulty of the problem varies by factors of a trillion." Despite this, Dean acknowledged that current AI models possess capabilities that often surpass the average person's performance in non-physical tasks. He explained, "Most people are not that proficient at random tasks they haven't encountered before, and some models today are fairly adept at a wide range of activities." However, Dean cautioned that while these models can outperform average individuals, they still fall short of human expert levels in specific areas. He highlighted that distinguishing between being better than the average person and excelling beyond world experts is crucial. When asked about the potential for AI to achieve breakthroughs more rapidly than humans, Dean expressed optimism, suggesting we are already nearing that point in certain fields. "Automated search and computation can significantly accelerate progress in scientific and engineering domains," he noted, indicating this trend could enhance human capabilities over the next two decades. The definition of AGI is a hotly debated topic among experts, with many, including leaders from AI labs, suggesting it represents a form of intelligence that mimics human understanding and learning. While some prominent figures like Google DeepMind's CEO Demis Hassabis and OpenAI's Sam Altman predict that AGI could emerge within years, others, such as Meta's Yann LeCun and researcher Andrew Ng, foresee a much longer timeline, possibly spanning decades.
