On January 28, Google announced a substantial grant of ₹85 crore directed towards Wadhwani AI, aimed at revitalizing India’s public education system. This funding, funneled through Google.org, is designed to incorporate 'India-first' artificial intelligence tools into government-operated platforms, reflecting a growing belief among 74% of Indians that AI can enhance educational outcomes. This initiative is a vital part of Google's larger mission to make responsible AI learning accessible to all. The goal is to reach an impressive 75 million students and 1.8 million educators across India by December 2027. The funding will specifically bolster the integration of advanced AI capabilities into existing public resources, such as the SWAYAM online learning platform and the POSHAN Tracker, which is dedicated to monitoring health and nutrition. Instead of creating isolated systems, this collaborative project aims to enhance the platforms that millions of Indians currently utilize. By embedding AI directly into these government services, the initiative seeks to offer personalized educational support to learners at every stage, from early childhood to vocational training. The investment will lead to the development of innovative AI-driven features intended to boost learning outcomes. These include voice-based AI tools that assist young students in improving their reading fluency in ten different Indian languages. Furthermore, AI-powered English language coaches will be introduced to help students and early-career professionals develop essential communication skills for the modern job market. Google's core educational tools, including Gemini and Google Classroom, will also be made available in multiple Indian languages, ensuring inclusivity for students regardless of their primary language. This grant to Wadhwani AI is part of a broader strategy by Google in India, which also encompasses a collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to establish the nation’s first AI-enabled university at Chaudhary Charan Singh University. Preeti Lobana, VP and Country Manager of Google India, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We are energised by the opportunity to scale this impact. By combining the human connection of teaching with research-backed AI principles in learning, we are helping build a future where every learner in India, regardless of their language or location, has the opportunity to reach their full potential." Insights derived from both the Wadhwani AI project and the university initiative are expected to contribute to a national framework aimed at modernizing higher education in India. This framework is envisioned as a blueprint to assist thousands of institutions, thereby bridging the digital divide between major cities and smaller towns.
