Google to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic as search giant spreads its AI bets

In a significant development for the artificial intelligence sector, Google has announced plans to invest as much as $40 billion in Anthropic, a leading AI firm. This partnership was confirmed on Friday, marking a pivotal moment as tech giants intensify their investments in AI leaders. The agreement begins with an initial investment of $10 billion from Google, based on Anthropic's latest valuation of $380 billion. The remaining $30 billion will be contingent on specific performance milestones achieved by Anthropic, according to reports from Bloomberg. This collaboration builds upon a long-standing relationship between the two companies. Earlier this month, Anthropic revealed it had secured 5 gigawatts of computing capacity through a partnership with Google and Broadcom, set to come online next year. There is potential for Anthropic to increase its computing capacity further in the future. Google's cloud division currently provides access to Anthropic's Claude models, positioning itself in direct competition with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Additionally, Google offers custom chips known as tensor processing units (TPUs) as an alternative to Nvidia's graphics processing units. The competitive landscape intensifies with Google's Gemini, which is vying against Anthropic in the AI models and services market. The relationship between these firms traces back to 2023, when Google initially invested $300 million for approximately a 10% stake in Anthropic. This was followed by an additional $2 billion investment a few months later, bringing Google's total investment to over $3 billion and a reported 14% ownership stake in the company. Currently, major tech companies are funneling billions into frontier AI labs, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, with funding rounds exceeding previous startup investments. This influx of capital is expected to generate significant revenue returns. Anthropic's recent agreement with Google comes as the company addresses infrastructure strains due to increasing demand for its Claude models from enterprises and developers. OpenAI has publicly critiqued Anthropic for not securing adequate computing resources, highlighting the competitive pressures in the AI space. Notably, Anthropic also recently struck a deal with Amazon, which included a $5 billion investment and the potential for an additional $20 billion linked to commercial milestones. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, emphasized the importance of scaling infrastructure to meet the surging demand for Claude, stating, "Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand." Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and executives, Anthropic has seen its AI products, especially the Claude Code assistant, gain immense popularity. The company's annualized revenue has reportedly surpassed $30 billion, illustrating its rapid growth in a competitive field.
