In a surprising turn of events, Google has made a bold assertion in its latest court filing regarding the state of the open web. As the tech giant prepares for its upcoming legal battle, it seeks to persuade the court against breaking up its advertising business, following a recent setback in an antitrust case related to ad technology. In its response to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Google stated, "The fact is that today, the open web is already in rapid decline." This claim is part of Google's argument against the government's proposed remedies, which include divesting its AdX marketplace. The company argues that such a move would further endanger numerous websites that rely on advertising for revenue. The DOJ's attempts to force divestment of other Google products, such as Chrome, have previously been rejected by the courts. Google, which has established itself as a dominant force in the online advertising landscape, insists that it has no competition compelling enough to challenge its influence. The court's decision in the earlier case found that Google had suppressed rival technologies by tying its display ad services to the AdX marketplace, allowing it to favor its own offerings in ad auctions. As frustrations grow among users regarding AI-driven search products, Google has maintained that these innovations still attract significant web traffic. Yet, in light of the potential threats to its advertising empire, the company now characterizes the open web as being in a precarious state. This assertion can be found in a recent filing dated September 5, which has drawn attention from industry observers. In contrast, a recent study by the Pew Research Center indicates that AI-driven search results may be contributing to a noticeable decrease in web traffic. Despite this, Google executives, including search lead Liz Reid, have countered that search engagement remains "relatively stable." This situation raises questions about the tech giant's narrative as it navigates its complex legal challenges.
