You can now store your Aadhaar in Google Wallet...Here’s what it means for you

In a significant move to enhance digital identity options in India, Google has announced that users can now securely store Aadhaar-based verifiable credentials within Google Wallet. This initiative is part of a larger effort to roll out secure digital IDs globally. According to a blog post from the tech giant, digital IDs simplify the process of identity verification, eliminating the need to sift through physical documents. This development builds on Google’s existing partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). With this feature, Indian users can save their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials on their devices, effectively creating a 'secure, digital-first ID' suitable for various everyday applications. Emphasizing the importance of privacy and security, Google stated, "For these credentials to be truly useful, they need to be secure, private, and effective across both physical and digital spaces." The company has implemented advanced privacy measures, including selective disclosure, which allows users to share only relevant details of their ID when necessary. The initial network of partners for this initiative includes prominent services where identity verification is essential. Notable collaborations feature PVR INOX for age verification, BharatMatrimony for user verification, and Atlys for visa services, among others. The gig economy platform Snabbit is also expected to incorporate these identity checks soon. Google reiterated that security, privacy, and interoperability form the core of its digital identity strategy, ensuring these principles are embedded at every stage of implementation. Beyond India, Google is broadening its digital ID capabilities to other regions, including Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, where users can create ID passes based on their passport information for storage in Google Wallet. This functionality aims to provide a straightforward and private way to verify identity for both online and offline services requiring age or identity confirmation.
