The highly anticipated Made by Google 2025 event has arrived, marking a significant moment in tech ahead of Apple's upcoming hardware showcase. On Wednesday, Google unveiled its Pixel 10 series, introducing a new foldable phone, the Pixel Watch 4, and the second generation of its budget-friendly A-Series earbuds, alongside advanced AI functionalities with Gemini. Building on earlier AI enhancements presented at a developer conference in May, the Pixel 10 event showcased additional capabilities of Gemini. A promotional YouTube video even humorously alluded to Apple’s previous unfulfilled promises regarding AI advancements in their iPhones. This year, Gemini Live has been upgraded, allowing users to interact with the AI through their camera. For instance, users can capture images of their living spaces and receive tailored interior design suggestions from the AI. The photography features on the Pixel 10 received significant upgrades as well. The introduction of “Camera Coach” enables the AI to provide real-time advice on taking better photos, suggesting optimal angles and lighting as users snap pictures. Additionally, a new conversational photo editing tool allows users to instruct Gemini on modifications, such as enhancing brightness, removing unwanted objects, or altering backgrounds. The standard Pixel 10 model has undergone notable enhancements, particularly with the inclusion of a telephoto lens, a feature that was previously exclusive to Pro models. Google teased the Pixel 10’s capabilities ahead of the event, claiming that the new 5x telephoto lens offers the best zoom quality yet, complemented by a 100x Pro Res Zoom for exceptional close-up shots. All phones in the Pixel 10 lineup are powered by the new Tensor G5 processor, marking the beginning of the Gemini era, which promises improved performance and energy efficiency compared to its predecessor, the Tensor G4. While the overall design remains consistent with the Pixel 9 series, the displays have not changed, with the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro featuring a 6.3-inch screen, while the larger Pixel 10 Pro XL boasts a 6.8-inch display. Moreover, the Pro models offer enhanced camera capabilities, improved video quality, and larger batteries, which allow for quicker charging, addressing previous concerns regarding battery longevity in Pixel devices compared to competitors like Apple and Samsung. Notably, the Pixel 10 devices incorporate magnetic technology branded as “PixelSnap,” akin to Apple’s MagSafe, with a new range of magnetic accessories, including a $40 Pixelsnap charger supporting Qi2 wireless charging. Google's new foldable phone features a larger cover display at approximately 6.4 inches, paired with an 8-inch main screen. Enhancements include a more robust hinge and slimmer bezels for a sleeker look, as well as an IP68 rating that provides resistance to dust and water—an upgrade from the previous Pixel 9 Pro Fold. In addition to the impressive hardware, Google introduced Pixel Journal, a new journaling application aimed at rivaling Apple’s Journal app. This app allows users to document entries with photos, locations, and activities, while also incorporating AI features that suggest prompts for inspiration. Wearables also took center stage, with the Pixel Watch 4 boasting a sturdier design, extended battery life, and slimmer bezels. The smartwatch now features AI capabilities that allow users to access Gemini simply by lifting their wrist. The new Pixel Buds 2a come equipped with active noise cancellation and are available in vibrant colors like Hazel and Iris, while the upgraded Pixel Buds Pro 2 include gesture controls for answering calls. Moreover, Google announced an AI-powered personal health coach for the Fitbit app, providing users with customized workout and sleep plans based on their individual goals and preferences. This feature will debut in October and will be integrated into the redesigned Fitbit app, compatible with the latest Fitbit devices and Pixel Watches. As Google continues to push the boundaries of technology, the Pixel 10 series and its accompanying devices promise to elevate the user experience in the realms of photography, health, and everyday convenience.
