Google just declared itself a contender in AI design

At its recent I/O event, Google made waves by introducing Pics, a revolutionary app designed for AI-powered design and image creation within Google Workspace. The tech giant emphasizes that this tool is intended for everyone, catering to a wide audience that includes educators and entrepreneurs alike. With Pics, users can effortlessly create a variety of visuals, from social media graphics to invitations and marketing materials, all by simply entering text prompts. This initiative positions Google as a formidable competitor against popular design platforms like Canva and emerging AI-native tools such as Claude Design from Anthropic. Google’s move into this domain highlights the growing importance of AI-driven design, where the stakes are high for businesses reliant on visual content. Currently in a testing phase at I/O, the app is expected to be available for Google AI Ultra subscribers this summer. While acknowledging the advancements in AI image generation, Google recognizes the challenges users face when attempting to modify specific elements of an image. In response, Pics not only generates visuals but also enhances them with user-friendly editing capabilities. Powered by Gemini, the app allows users to adjust any part of a generated image easily. Users can either rewrite prompts for changes or directly click on the elements they wish to modify, adding comments similarly to feedback in Google Docs. For instance, if a user creates a birthday invitation and needs to update the time, they can do so manually. The app runs on Nano Banana 2, which Google claims is particularly suited for this application due to its precise text rendering and comprehensive visual output. Additionally, Pics is seamlessly integrated into Google Workspace, facilitating collaborative visual projects across various apps. Once satisfied with their creations, users can download, share, or even pass designs for final edits before distribution.
