Google introduces a faster, cheaper image generator with Nano Banana 2 Lite

On Tuesday, Google announced the launch of Nano Banana 2 Lite, the latest iteration of its in-house AI image and video generator. This version is designed to be both faster and more cost-effective than its predecessor, according to the company. With significantly reduced latency, Nano Banana 2 Lite can generate images in just four seconds, making it an ideal choice for users needing to create and refine numerous images quickly. The pricing is notably attractive, set at $0.034 per 1,000 images, catering to those looking to efficiently draft and enhance their visual content. This rollout comes on the heels of the original Nano Banana's debut last summer, which was powered by the Gemini 3.1 Flash model, and the February release of Nano Banana 2, which enhanced the generator's capabilities to produce more lifelike images. For more advanced users, Google offers Nano Banana Pro, a robust and pricier model that caters to complex use cases. While Nano Banana 2 is labeled as a versatile workhorse, the Lite version is specifically tailored for high-volume workflows that require rapid execution, as stated by Google. Despite some consumer concerns regarding the quality of AI-generated images, many companies remain committed to investing in AI tools for generating visuals and videos. Google positions its models as user-friendly resources for creating advertisements, even as the relationship between Hollywood and AI technology continues to evolve, facing scrutiny from various creative communities. Adding to its AI offerings, Google recently entered a $75 million partnership with the indie film studio A24, a move that has sparked significant debate among fans. Nano Banana 2 Lite is now accessible via Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, effectively replacing the older Nano Banana model, which is now categorized as a legacy version. Additionally, Google announced an expanded rollout of Gemini Omni Flash, initially revealed at Google I/O earlier this year. Priced at $0.10 per second of video output, this new tool complements the introduction of Omni Product Studio, which transforms static images into dynamic e-commerce videos. In a recent blog post, Google emphasized the importance of creative iteration in generative media, highlighting how these models enable developers to create cohesive multimedia experiences that seamlessly link rapid image generation with video production and editing.
