Google’s new Nano Banana 2 Lite image model is its fastest and cheapest yet

This innovative model strikes an impressive balance between quality and speed, making it the most efficient and affordable option available in Google's lineup. Now integrated into the Google ecosystem, Nano Banana 2 Lite can produce images in a fraction of the time required by more robust models. Officially designated as Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image, this model excels in scenarios where rapid prototyping is essential and absolute quality is less critical. Google demonstrates the model's capabilities with examples that illustrate its ability to approach the quality of its more advanced counterparts. While users have rated the outputs of Nano Banana 2 Lite nearly on par with the traditional versions, Google acknowledges some limitations. For instance, the model struggles with small text and is prone to inaccuracies in infographics. Additionally, consistency in rendering characters and people can vary across different iterations. However, the standout feature of Nano Banana 2 Lite is its speed. Users can expect to generate images from text in approximately four seconds using the default low-thinking mode—significantly quicker than the standard Nano Banana model, which takes around 20 seconds. This boost in efficiency translates to cost savings for developers accessing the model through the API, with an average price of $0.034 per 1,000 images. In comparison, the API rates are notably lower than those for the original Nano Banana, offering $0.25 for 1 million input tokens and $1.50 for 1 million output tokens, half the cost of its predecessor models.
