Google rolls out new Windows desktop app with Spotlight-like search tool

On Tuesday, Google introduced an exciting new experimental application for Windows, aimed at enhancing users' ability to quickly locate information. This application enables users to employ the Alt + Space shortcut for instant searches across their computer files, installed applications, Google Drive, and online content. Mirroring the functionality of Mac's Spotlight search, this tool facilitates rapid access to various resources, streamlining the user experience. The app is part of Search Labs, Google's initiative that allows users to experiment with early-stage features and provide valuable feedback prior to a wider rollout. A standout feature of this new application is the integration of Google Lens, empowering users to select and search any content displayed on their screens. This capability can assist with tasks such as translating text or images and solving complex math problems. Furthermore, the app includes an AI Mode that enables users to engage with Google's advanced search functionalities, allowing for complex, multi-part inquiries through an intuitive AI interface. Users can seamlessly toggle between various result categories, including all results, AI mode, images, shopping, and videos, and they also have the choice to switch to dark mode. Currently, this innovative app is available in English and is accessible for users in the U.S. with a PC running Windows 10 or later.
