In a striking response to Amazon's recent launch of AI-enhanced Echo devices, Google has introduced an upgraded collection of its Google Home and Nest products, all showcasing the capabilities of its Gemini AI assistant. This new lineup is complemented by a refreshed Google Home software platform and an overarching strategy aimed at expanding the reach of Gemini across various manufacturers and businesses. While Google plans to continue developing its own hardware, the company is keen on making Gemini accessible to a broader audience. This strategy mirrors Google's approach with Android, where they not only release their flagship Pixel devices but also enable other companies to create Android-compatible smartphones tailored to diverse form factors and price ranges. “We aim to build flagship hardware in specific categories where there’s significant potential for innovation with Gemini,” explained Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Nest, during a press briefing. He emphasized that Gemini should not be limited to a single manufacturer’s devices, ensuring it remains accessible to a wide range of consumers. To illustrate this vision, Google has unveiled an enhanced range of Nest devices, including the Nest Cam Outdoor and Indoor, as well as the Nest Doorbell, all leveraging Gemini's capabilities. Additionally, the company teased an upgraded Google Home speaker expected to launch in spring 2026 and announced a collaboration with Walmart for an affordable indoor camera and doorbell. Crucially, Google is prioritizing existing device owners, allowing those with compatible hardware to access Gemini features without the need for new purchases. This decision reflects Google's commitment to its extensive ecosystem, which currently includes over 800 million devices connected through the Google Home Cloud-to-Cloud APIs and the Matter protocol. As part of its strategy, Google is equipping its “Works with Google Home” partners with tools to develop AI-enhanced cameras and smart devices, with Walmart leading the charge by offering a budget-friendly indoor camera and doorbell. Gemini aims to revolutionize user interactions with smart devices, enabling more natural conversations. For instance, if a user prompts the device to play a specific song, Gemini can handle follow-up queries about lyrics or suggest similar music. It can also assist in household management by managing calendars, grocery lists, and reminders in a more intuitive manner. The AI’s capabilities extend to understanding context, such as knowing to turn on kitchen lights when informed about cooking plans. Users can also group commands, making interactions seamless and efficient. For enhanced security, Gemini can filter notifications from cameras and doorbells, highlighting significant events instead of overwhelming users with information. The AI also simplifies automation setups, allowing users to request suggestions for improving home safety or energy management. The redesigned Google Home app, now faster and more stable, integrates Gemini AI to provide updates on daily activities and manage devices more effectively. Additionally, users can engage in free-flowing conversations with Gemini Live, fostering a more organic interaction where repetitive prompts are unnecessary. Kattukaran envisions this conversational experience as a transformative aspect of smart home technology, stating, “We’re laying the groundwork for a home that can see, hear, understand, and ultimately act on your behalf, making your life easier.” The rollout of the updated Google Home app begins today, with new Nest and Walmart devices available now, while the upgraded Home speaker is set to debut in spring 2026.
