In a significant move to enhance user experience, Google has officially launched a dedicated search application for Windows, alongside a native Gemini app for Mac users. After months of testing, the Windows app is now available to the public, providing an alternative to traditional browser access. The Google app for desktop, which initially appeared in beta form last September, faced some challenges in its early stages, including difficulties in updating. However, the official release addresses these issues and introduces a variety of search capabilities designed to streamline users’ interactions with Google. Users can easily access the app by pressing Alt + Space, which opens a compact search interface that overlays their current tasks. This feature allows for instant web searches, as well as access to local files and applications with the proper authorization. The search results mimic those found in a browser, complete with AI Overviews and an AI Mode. Additionally, the new app can derive context from what is currently displayed on the screen, facilitating searches that are more relevant and efficient. A Lens button allows users to highlight portions of their screen to initiate immediate web searches. Users also have the option to share their screens—whether it be a single window or the entire desktop—as context for their queries. The Google desktop app is compatible with Windows 10 and 11 and is currently available in English. While users can access it without logging into their accounts, they will encounter limited functionality, similar to using Google’s web services without sign-in. The app can be downloaded from its dedicated landing page, marking a new chapter in Google’s commitment to enhancing desktop search capabilities.
