Google takes on ChatGPT’s Study Mode with new ‘Guided Learning’ tool in Gemini

As the new academic year draws near, Google has introduced an exciting new feature called Guided Learning within its Gemini platform. This tool is designed to act as a virtual tutor, aiming to foster a deeper comprehension of subjects rather than simply providing answers. This announcement comes just a week after OpenAI unveiled its own Study Mode for ChatGPT, which similarly seeks to enhance critical thinking skills rather than merely delivering direct responses. Both companies are addressing growing concerns that AI chatbots may compromise the learning process by offering straightforward answers. Guided Learning allows Gemini to dissect problems step-by-step, customizing explanations to cater to individual user needs. The feature incorporates various multimedia elements, such as images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes, enabling users to actively engage with the material and test their knowledge, rather than relying solely on the provided answers. Google emphasizes that this feature is designed to help users grasp the underlying principles of concepts. Maureen Heymans, Google’s VP of Learning & Sustainability, described it as a collaborative partner for learners, whether they are preparing for an exam on enzymes, drafting a paper about the vital role of bees in our ecosystems, or exploring their passion for photography. In addition to the Guided Learning feature, Google is enhancing Gemini's overall functionality to support user learning more effectively. Gemini will now automatically integrate images, diagrams, and YouTube videos into its responses, making complex topics more accessible. Moreover, users can request Gemini to generate flashcards and study guides based on quiz results or class materials. Furthermore, Google announced a special initiative for students in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil, offering a complimentary one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan. This plan grants expanded access to advanced features such as Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, Deep Research, and more.
