In an exciting announcement at its annual I/O conference, Google showcased its latest innovation: audio smart glasses designed to enhance the wearables market. This move comes as Google seeks to carve out a niche in a space where competitors like Meta have already begun to make significant strides. Collaborating with industry leaders such as Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker, Google is set to introduce glasses that will feature the Gemini assistant. These stylish eyewear options will be compatible with both Android and iOS devices and are anticipated to hit the market later this year. Shahram Izadi, who oversees Android XR products and platform, emphasized during his keynote that this launch is just the beginning, with the first two designs being part of a broader collection set to debut this fall. The audio smart glasses aim to deliver information discreetly, providing users with audio cues rather than visual displays, making for a seamless experience. Alongside this announcement, Google presented a series of advancements in AI technology, including new models and agents, underscoring the company's commitment to innovation in an uncertain wearables landscape. Last year, Google had already hinted at its ambitions in the smart display glasses market and confirmed in December that it was developing audio-only glasses tailored for its Android XR platform. The real treasure for Google lies in the user data these devices will gather, which will aid in refining their AI models. However, the tech giant has yet to address privacy concerns regarding these forthcoming glasses. In the realm of AI eyewear, Meta has seen early success through its collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, highlighted by the impressive sales of its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, which utilized Meta's AI assistant and sold 7 million units in 2025. Meta also recently launched its display glasses, enabling users to view messages and other features through a compact display integrated into the lenses. Apple is reportedly in the development phase of its smart glasses, exploring various frame styles and camera designs, while other tech players like Snap and Alibaba are also entering the AI glasses market. During the recent conference, product manager Nishtha Bhatia demonstrated the capabilities of the audio sunglasses, using them to activate Gemini, connect to DoorDash for a coffee order, and manage her calendar by reading text messages. Google highlighted that these glasses can provide turn-by-turn navigation assistance and allow users to interact with Gemini about their surroundings. Additionally, they possess the ability to capture photos and utilize Google's AI image generator, Nano Banana, to creatively alter images based on user prompts, such as adding humorous hats to pictures. This launch positions Google at the forefront of the evolving AI eyewear segment.
