Google launches Nano Banana 2, updating its viral AI image generator

On Thursday, Google announced the launch of Nano Banana 2, the latest iteration of its highly acclaimed AI image generator. The initial version, introduced in August, quickly captured the public's imagination, leading to its viral success. Following this, the company released Nano Banana Pro in November, which was built on the sophisticated Gemini 3 Pro framework. In a detailed blog post, Google emphasized that the updated Nano Banana 2 features enhanced world knowledge, leveraging real-time data from Gemini to produce more accurate images. The tech giant also highlighted improvements in speed, instruction adherence, and text accuracy, making it ideal for applications such as marketing mockups and greeting card designs. While Nano Banana 2 aims to excel in rapid generation and precise instruction following, Google confirmed that Nano Banana Pro will continue to be available for tasks requiring high fidelity and maximum factual accuracy. This new model will replace its predecessor across all variants of Gemini, including Fast, Thinking, and Pro. The market for AI image and video generators is booming, with users increasingly able to create intricate graphics and videos using simple text prompts. The surge in this technology follows OpenAI's introduction of its video-generation tool, Sora, in 2024, which CEO Sam Altman noted was straining their AI processors due to high demand. Additionally, Adobe is integrating AI capabilities into its creative suite with its own photo and video generator, Firefly. However, the rapid growth of generative AI tools has raised significant concerns within the creative industry regarding copyright infringement. Companies like ByteDance have come under fire from major Hollywood studios, including Disney and Paramount, over the use of proprietary content in their AI video-making tool, Seedance. As the industry evolves, these discussions are becoming increasingly crucial.
