Android 17 launches with new multitasking tools as Google expands Gemini features

On Tuesday, Google introduced the final version of its much-anticipated Android 17 operating system, along with its smartwatch counterpart, Wear OS 7. This update first rolls out on Google’s own Pixel devices, accompanied by a Pixel Drop that incorporates a variety of new features, prominently featuring support for cutting-edge AI models such as the music-generation tool Lyria 3, the multimodal Gemini Omni, and advanced speech-to-translation capabilities powered by AudioLM for the Pixel 10a. This launch highlights Google’s strategy of leveraging its Android and Pixel platforms to showcase the latest advancements in AI technology. While Apple is striving to catch up with its recent Siri and iOS 27 upgrades, Google is doubling down on the capabilities of Gemini, focusing on enhancing creation, communication, and overall user experience. Among the new features in the Pixel Drop, Android Quick Share now supports file sharing with Apple’s AirDrop for older Pixel 8a and 9a models. Users can also edit videos directly within conversations using Gemini Omni, while Lyria 3 allows the creation of music tracks through text prompts and images in the Gemini app. Additionally, the Pixel 10a will benefit from improved speech-to-speech translation tools. Android 17 further enhances the user experience by introducing a personalized outgoing audio message feature for missed calls and expanding the “Take a Message” feature to more regions. The update also adds emergency detection capabilities to the Google Pixel Watch; in the event of a car crash or a fall, the watch can automatically alert emergency services and designated contacts. Beyond AI, Android 17 introduces a new “bubble bar” interface, which provides users with a streamlined way to manage and quickly access their most recently used apps. This feature is designed to facilitate smoother multitasking. Social media enthusiasts will appreciate the update’s new capability to record videos using the selfie camera while simultaneously capturing the phone screen, ideal for reaction videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Enhancements in parental controls include a new “Mark as Lost” feature in Find Hub, improved Live Threat Detection, and the ability to set screen time limits with a PIN without requiring a Google account. The update also introduces a foldable gaming mode for better gameplay experience, along with live updates for smartwatch users from phone apps. Looking ahead, Wear OS will soon incorporate more Gemini Intelligence features, enabling personalized widget creation through descriptions and enhancing connectivity with Google apps and chat history. Google also claims battery life improvements of up to 10%, along with new automation capabilities for Wear OS.
