Google plans to launch two AI-powered glasses in 2026: All details

In a significant announcement during its online event, "The Android Show: XR Edition," held on December 8, 2025, Google revealed exciting details about its upcoming Android XR platform. The tech titan is set to introduce two innovative categories of AI-powered glasses, slated for release in 2026. Among these new offerings are wired XR glasses that utilize the Android XR platform, alongside lightweight AI glasses designed for comfort and all-day wear. The latter will be integrated with the Gemini assistant, enhancing user interaction through voice commands. Earlier this year, Google forged partnerships with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to develop audio-only AI glasses for everyday use, reminiscent of the Meta Ray-Ban glasses. The confirmation of these smart glasses, equipped with speakers, microphones, and cameras, ushers in a new era of hands-free technology. Additionally, Google introduced in-lens display AI glasses that will allow discreet content viewing directly within the eyewear. This development positions Google as a potential competitor to the popular Meta Ray-Ban glasses, which have garnered significant attention in the smart glasses market. The event also highlighted Project Aura from XREAL, representing the first wired XR glasses built on the Android XR framework. These glasses promise a compact design while delivering an experience akin to that of an Android XR headset, thanks to advanced optical see-through technology. Notably, the AI glasses will rely on a tethered puck housing the essential computing hardware and battery. To support developers in creating immersive applications for this new technology, Google announced the third developer preview of the Android XR software. This initiative will pave the way for the creation of enriched 3D environments, spatial applications, and enhanced mixed reality experiences tailored for both the XR headset and AI glasses.
