Google to build data center in Minnesota with new solar, wind power and battery storage

Google has announced its plans to establish its inaugural data center in Minnesota, marking a significant leap in the state's renewable energy landscape. This development comes through a collaboration with utility provider Xcel, as revealed in a statement on Tuesday. The proposed facility will span 480 acres in Pine Island, a small town located approximately 70 miles southeast of Minneapolis, with a population of around 4,000 residents. Until now, Google's involvement in this project had not been publicly acknowledged. The new data center is aimed at supporting various artificial intelligence initiatives as well as expanding Google's cloud services. Despite facing some local opposition, the project has received backing from the city council, although construction has yet to commence. The emergence of data centers has sparked political discussions in several communities across the U.S., with concerns over rising electricity costs and environmental implications becoming increasingly prevalent. These centers are known to consume substantial water resources for cooling purposes. While Google has not disclosed specific energy consumption figures for the data center, the company has committed to covering all associated electricity costs and financing the necessary grid infrastructure. Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's head of data center energy, emphasized in an interview with CNBC that their approach aims to prevent additional financial burdens on local ratepayers. The Minnesota Public Utility Commission will review the agreement between Google and Xcel. According to Bria Shea, president of Xcel for the region, the project will require additional transmission infrastructure. Notably, Google is prepared to fund any new transmission lines, even if the data center does not come to fruition. Under the deal with Xcel, Google will contribute an impressive 1,400 megawatts of wind energy, 200 megawatts of solar power, and 300 megawatts of battery storage to the grid. These renewable projects, which will be owned by Xcel, are anticipated to begin operation in 2028 and 2029. To facilitate the transition to clean energy, Google has agreed to a tariff that shields consumers from infrastructure costs while promoting renewable energy initiatives in Minnesota. Local residents have voiced their concerns through a group named "Stop the Pine Island Data Center," and the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy has filed a lawsuit challenging the project's environmental review. Nevertheless, Pine Island's city council had previously approved two preliminary development plans and financial incentives, including a substantial $36 million tax abatement. City Administrator Elizabeth Howard indicated that the project is expected to generate over $130 million in tax revenue for the town. Historically, Minnesota has not been a central hub for data centers. However, as major tech companies continue to expand their reach, the state is gradually becoming more attractive, with currently 74 data centers operating within its borders. For comparison, Virginia remains the leading market globally, housing 570 such facilities.
