Google’s big India bet: $15 Billion Vizag AI data centre foundation to be laid on April 28

On April 28, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, is set to inaugurate the foundation of a monumental $15 billion artificial intelligence data center in Visakhapatnam (Vizag). This initiative marks one of Google's largest foreign direct investment efforts in India, projected to unfold over the next five years. The data center will not only harness advanced AI infrastructure but also establish a subsea gateway, delivering gigawatt-scale computing capabilities for global operations. This project is particularly significant as it represents Google’s inaugural AI hub in the country, with a long-term goal of expanding its capacity to reach 5 gigawatts, surpassing India's total data center capacity as of late 2025. Spanning an impressive 600 acres across three sites—Rambilli, Adavivaram, and Tarluvada—the data center is set to play a pivotal role in supporting Google Cloud and AI services throughout India. Alongside its technological advancements, the project is expected to generate high-value employment opportunities and foster a new AI ecosystem for the youth in Andhra Pradesh. The inauguration ceremony is anticipated to draw the attendance of high-ranking officials from Google, including Chief Minister Naidu. Collaborative partners such as AdaniConnex and Airtel will be instrumental in developing the necessary infrastructure for the AI hub. AdaniConnex will focus on creating the core data center facilities, incorporating renewable energy systems and energy storage solutions to promote sustainable operations. Airtel, on the other hand, will be responsible for constructing and managing the high-capacity fiber-optic network, along with a new international subsea cable landing station in Vizag, ensuring optimal connectivity for Google’s cloud and AI services. With an expected completion date set for July 2028, this ambitious project is poised to become the largest data center cluster in Asia, marking a significant milestone for both Google and India's technological landscape.
