Google has launched a pilot program that incorporates AI-generated article summaries on select publications' Google News pages, as announced on Wednesday. Participating publishers include notable names such as Der Spiegel, El País, Folha, Infobae, Kompas, The Guardian, The Times of India, The Washington Examiner, and The Washington Post. This innovative initiative aims to determine how AI can enhance audience engagement, according to Google's blog post. By introducing AI-powered article overviews, the tech giant hopes to provide users with additional context before they decide to click on a story. While there is potential for reduced clicks on articles due to these summaries, involved publications will receive direct compensation from Google, which could offset any decline in site traffic. These AI-generated overviews will exclusively appear on the Google News pages of the participating publications, rather than throughout the broader Google News or Search platforms. This isn't the first time Google has integrated AI in news delivery; in July, the company introduced similar AI summaries in the Discover feature of its search app. This update changed the presentation of news feeds, displaying logos from multiple outlets along with AI-generated summaries that reference those sources. Additionally, Google is exploring audio briefings for users who prefer auditory news consumption as part of this pilot. These features will include clear attribution and direct links to articles. Collaborations are also in place with organizations like Estadão, Antara, Yonhap, and The Associated Press to integrate real-time information, enhancing user experience in the Gemini app. In conjunction with this announcement, Google is rolling out its “Preferred Sources” feature globally, which allows users to customize their Top Stories section with preferred news sites and blogs. Initially launched in the U.S. and India in August, this feature will soon be available to English-language users worldwide, with plans for expansion to all supported languages in the near future. Moreover, Google is set to highlight links from users' news subscriptions in a dedicated carousel within the Gemini app. While these features aim to facilitate access to news from favored sources, they raise concerns about potentially creating ideological bubbles that limit exposure to diverse viewpoints. Additionally, Google plans to augment the number of inline links in AI Mode and introduce “contextual introductions” that briefly explain the value of embedded links, enhancing the overall user experience.
