Google has rolled out exciting updates to its innovative video editing tool, Vids, which is part of the Google Workspace suite. The latest enhancements include the introduction of AI avatars, automatic transcript trimming, and image-to-video capabilities, all aimed at simplifying video creation for users. In addition to these advanced tools, Google is launching a consumer-friendly version of Vids, which will be available for free. Although this version will offer basic editing controls, access to Google's template library, font collection, and stock media, it will not include the AI features at this stage. The new AI avatars allow users to generate videos effortlessly by simply submitting a script and selecting an avatar from various voices and personas. This functionality echoes offerings from startups like Synthesia and D-ID, which provide companies with similar tools for creating educational and training videos. Initially announced during the Google I/O event in May, the AI avatars feature has now transitioned from beta to general availability. Additionally, Vids will now feature smart editing capabilities that identify and remove filler words, such as "um" or "ah," as well as extended pauses, streamlining the editing process. Google also previously introduced an image-to-video generation tool for Veo 3, and this feature is now integrated into Vids, enabling users to create eight-second video clips easily. Looking ahead, the tech giant is reportedly working on enhancements like noise cancellation, backgrounds and effects akin to Google Meet, and new sizing formats, including portrait, landscape, and square. While these AI-powered features will be accessible to Workplace Business, Enterprise Starter users, Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers, and Workspace for Education customers, the company has yet to announce specific release dates for the upcoming enhancements.
