Google expands Gemini AI capabilities for Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive

In a significant enhancement to its Workspace suite, Google has announced the introduction of advanced Gemini AI capabilities for its applications, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This update allows users to effortlessly create documents, slideshows, and spreadsheets by utilizing content directly from Gmail, Chat, and Drive. Currently in beta, the new Gemini AI features are initially available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with support for English globally across Google Workspace tools. According to Google, these improvements aim to personalize the workspace experience and streamline task completion for users. In Google Docs, Gemini can autonomously draft documents by pulling relevant information from users' files and emails. Users can direct Gemini to execute specific tasks, such as generating a newsletter based on previous meeting minutes. The update also introduces AI tools such as "Match writing style" and "Match doc format," enabling users to refine their document's voice and tone or replicate the layout of a reference document. For Sheets, Gemini is capable of creating spreadsheets from scratch based on user commands. The new "Fill with Gemini" feature allows for auto-filling tables with categorized, summarized, or real-time data sourced from the internet. For instance, users can automate the completion of a college application tracker with critical dates and tuition information without manual input. In Slides, Gemini can generate new slides that align with existing themes and extract pertinent content from various sources, including files, emails, and the web. Additionally, Google is developing a feature that would allow users to generate entire presentations with a single prompt. Drive has also been upgraded with Gemini AI's capabilities, offering an "AI Overview" that summarizes essential information from files, complete with citations. The "Ask Gemini in Drive" feature enables users to pose questions and retrieve information across documents, emails, calendar events, and more. These enhancements position Google to maintain its competitive edge against rivals like Microsoft's Copilot and Anthropic's Claude Cowork.
