Google is experimenting with machine-learning powered age estimation tech in the U.S.

Google is currently piloting a new machine-learning technology in the United States aimed at accurately estimating users' ages to tailor content across its services. This innovative approach will analyze data from Google accounts, including users' search histories and the types of videos they watch on YouTube, to ascertain their age. If the system determines that a user is under 18, they will receive an email outlining how their experience with Google products may change. For these younger users, the company plans to disable the timeline feature in Maps, halt personalized advertising, restrict access to certain ad categories, and block adult-themed applications on the Play Store. Additionally, Google will activate digital wellbeing features on YouTube, which include reminders to take breaks and notifications encouraging users to go to bed if they are watching videos late at night. Moreover, the platform will limit underage users' exposure to specific content that may adversely affect their body image. In cases where users believe they have been incorrectly categorized as underage, they will have the opportunity to appeal the decision by verifying their age with a government-issued ID or a selfie. This initiative follows similar measures that Google implemented for YouTube earlier this week, expanding its use of age estimation technology to all Google accounts in the U.S. The company has also hinted at successful trials of this tech in various markets, although specific locations have not been disclosed. Google stated, "Age assurance helps us ensure that adults can access the information and services they need while applying the right protections for younger users. Our method combines age estimation and, when necessary, age verification." Other social platforms, including Instagram and Roblox, are also adopting AI technologies to estimate users' ages. As concerns grow regarding appropriate content for minors, lawmakers in the U.S. are actively working on regulations related to age gating, with several states proposing or enacting laws. In the UK, similar age verification measures have been initiated following the enactment of the Online Safety Act.
